Mendocino FarmHack: Fuel Farming for the 21st Century

The theory behind FarmHack is to create "an Open Source Community for Resilient Agriculture," and we believe that an essential step towards community resiliency is to evaluate and transform our energy footprint. Measure S put us ahead of the crowd in regaining local sovereignty, but we must take the next steps in ensuring that our fuel comes to us sustainably and responsibly, and preferably locally.

Got squirrels?

Our orchard is overrun with squirrels who are chewing on bark and roots and doing severe damage. The orchard is fenced which means few predators. There's a bobcat but s/he can't keep up and squirrels are overpopulating. We're having trouble live trapping them and, even if we're successful, aren't sure what to do with them. Catch and release is illegal and we can't find any humane ways of killing them. Thoughts?

Urban Farm Challenge

Hi all,

I am new to this community so please excuse posting to the wrong topic. I am setting up an incentive prize (like the X Prize) to promote open source integrated urban farm design. It is early days but I am looking for 3 things: 1, feedback on the design of the prize, 2, potential members of the judging panel (i.e. experts in the different fields required) and 3, potential competitors for when the prize goes live.

You can read about the prize here: https://herox.com/urbanfarm

Locked out of a machine's programming

I'm a writer for a company called iFixit, which offers free open-source repair manuals for all kinds of electronics. We're doing research on technologies that have been limited by the DMCA, and—with help from some folks law students around the country—we've been specifically looking at farming equipment.

Across scientific disciplines carbons are finding new utility to solve our most vexing problems. Hacking the Carbon Cycle

If we replicate the Ecologic Services of the extinct megafauna, since 7 billion of us makes us the new Megafauna, then we could build back Soil Carbon with massive increases of Net Primary Production. An ecology not seen for 12,900 years. An Ecology not limited by Phosphorous, Sodium & lost Soil-C. A great synergy of the work restoring mine scarred lands & developing consumer, Horticultural & Agricultural markets.

Farmer as Creative Exhibit

I am curating an exhibit at the University of Michigan in October called Farmer as Creative. I just learned about farmhack today! The show will exhibit creative solutions us farmers use every day. Tools, machines, food, recipes, community, etc. Even some historic stuff like digging sticks and shell hoes. Would love to get submissions like the work I found on the site! Anyone out there interested in submitting work for the show??

Oyster mushroom fruiting containers

Hey hacker/maker/mycologists! I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on oyster mushrooms fruiting vessels for indoor and outdoor cultivation. I have been using 5gallon buckets which are free and food grade, drilled holes along the sides and wine corks to cap them. Anyone out there have a sweet diy/dit models for fruiting vessels or fruiting systems?! Any ideas would be great! -martin
