Some Design Principles for Open Farm Tools and Questions to Consider

Some design principles for open farm tools and questions to consider (and modify, discuss and add to)

Biology before steel and diesel – is there a way to approach this problem by using biological systems that add to soil health – such as cultural practices like cover cropping, mulching, crop or animal rotations etc.

Holistic approach – does this tool make me enjoy working with it as much as getting the job done faster?

Machine for hulling peanuts

Hi, I am new to farmhack forum.  I work in a rural community in Guatemala.  We want to make peanut butter and we have our first peanut harvest.  We find that it takes forever to remove the shells.  Can someone help me with a design for a machine to remove the shells?  It does not need to handle high volumes since we are a small operation. We can even sort the nuts from the shells ourselves.  Something simple that removes the shell without destroying the peanut.

Thanks,  Matt C.

Experienced farmer/builder/maker looking to volunteer in the US

Hi there

Im a (now part time) farmer in the UK and just had my work canceled for January. If anyone is interested in a collaborator in a project im quite up for a volunteering to help someone make something fun and useful.

Im quite a good builder, can weld, got a basic sense of mechanics, can use sketchup and design things, and generally enjoy making things with other people. I'm really keen on DIY tool design and keen to take it further.

Simple DIY data loggers with no custom PCBs

We've published a paper about these in Sensors [ http://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/18/2/530  } (open access, free pdf download) describing how we use these in caves and underwater, but we also use them on the surface in weather stations for atmospheric conditions, etc. These are stand alone loggers, and are relatively simple devices compared to the Pi-based wireless FIDO's that people have already been talking about in the FarmHack forums. So no text messages, etc.

Ethnographic Research, looking for interview Participants

Hey All,

My name is Matt Zucca and I'm a research assistant for Kelly Bronson at the University of Ottawa. I am glad to have found this forum. We've been searching far and wide for some people who have experience in agriculture, data, and playing around with agricultural tools. At the outset we were looking for people who 'hack' modern tractors and have experience playing with other tools.
