Your suggestions are needed this weekend for the Food Systems Hackathon at the NOFA-VT Winter Conference

Hi everyone, Interested in suggesting things a room full of software developers should hack on for the Food Systems Hackathon this weekend? Come to the How Can Technology Help Vermont's Food System? (link is external) Workshop on Saturday, February 16 at 10:45am in Burlington, VT for the NOFA-VT Winter Conference (link is external). The Heralds of Resource Sharing: Watch the Video (link is external)

Now let's apply this same logic to our food distribution systems!

Open source tools and data-sharing systems for producers, distributors, restaurants/food markets, and consumers.

Farm-to-fridge/table needs to be an open source distributed network!

Seeking developers and contributors to build out this new reality.

Sounds like a great time R.J.! Sorry I won't be able to attend, but I'd like to nominate the Farmer Dashboard tool concept (link is external), or some variation of that you all might come up with. A browser based dashboard would be good. If feasible, something that could be embedded within a Drupal site (module) would be awesome, something Dorn and I might be able to run with.

Some possible data sets, models, related tools to look at/adapt, with an emphasis on mapping (full list here (link is external) and here (link is external)): *Vt. Food Atlas (link is external) data. Atlas developers Vermont Design Works will be there and have shared API information. Participants will have full access to Atlas data. *Google Fusion Tables (link is external) *SoilWeb (link is external) *Local Food Marketsizer (link is external) *CropScape (link is external) -see developer guide (link is external) *EPS-HDT Socioeconomic Profiles (link is external) *USDA ERS Data (link is external) *Meat, Poultry and Egg Product Inspection Directory (link is external) *Farmers Markets (link is external) *National Digital Forecast Database (link is external) *OpenGeoportal (link is external) -for example, see GeoData@Tufts (link is external), where Web Services can be generated for select data sets, including 2007 Ag Census, WFS (link is external), WMS (link is external) *LocalFoodSystems.org's Business Ecosystem Tools (link is external) -They have agreed to share their code with the NEFKE project. We will be creating a regional data hub/registry of people, organizations, and projects as part of that project (likely using DKAN code (link is external)). *If you all get really ambitious, perhaps you could look at creating your own DKAN installation

Code on!

Cheers, Jeff

Please see the tool we created at the Hack in Davis California , a proposal of the functionality and improvements on existing ' pay per service' programs which centralize control.

" Farmer owned distribution software" is the name of the tool we created at that time. I wish I knew how to cross link to it, but you can go look for it.
