You can now log into FarmHack.net with your Google or Facebook account

There's a new addition on the login page. A google and facebook button.

login

If a previously unregistered user clicks these buttons it will create a new FarmHack.net account tied to their Facebook or Google account. For those of use that have existing FarmHack.net accounts, I wrote a how-to on linking your Google or Facebook account to your existing FarmHack.net profile.

Organization Profile wireframe from Dorn. RJ's quick prototype.

Dorn Cox has been advocating for an organizations/workshop feature on Farm Hack. While I haven't had time to get Organizations to Dorn's vision, I have achieved the functionality of this. See screenshots. The first one is Dorn's wireframe, the second is what I've had time to make. If what I made is "good enough" then lets go for it.

CALL TO ACTION One thing that I think could help push this along is a banner at the top of the page to indicate that it's an organization page. Does anyone want to design it?

Feature: Ability to mark Topic as a "Call To Action"

We've talked about this idea in the community before and I think it's time I implemented it. When tools need volunteers they absolutely need a way to broadcast it. Putting a notice on the wiki page works if someone comes across your tool page's wiki wiki but we really need a distinct way to BROADCAST a call to action. This could be important even for things like event organizing or in the Farm Hack Talk forum for things that might not even have tool pages yet (creating a tool page might be a call to action). Here's what I think might be a good way to tackle this:

Give organizations their own page on Farm Hack

From the Farm Hack Website planning that's been happening, Dorn Cox came up with a design for a new type of page on the website, an organization. Here's my estimate on time/cost of hiring someone to develop it.

  • Theme org profile (6 hours)
  • Manage org members functionality (4 hours)
  • add relationship to org field on tools (1 hour)
  • Org’s tools View (6 hours)
  • Org members’ forum activity View (6 hours)
  • Org events attended/attending (6 hours)
  • Test and deploy (8 hours) total hours: 37 hours @ $40/hour = $1,480

Types of Email subscriptions that are both powerful and simple

Lets figure out one or two email notification subscription plans that work really well for most users as opposed to what we have, email notification subscriptions that work ok for some users.

There are endless ways to configure email notifications and everyone seems to have their own personal preference. Developing a system that fits everyone needs will be both expensive and probably confusing for the end user. Lets brainstorm a couple of subscription types and then possibly survey our users to find out what they might like.

Some tool wikis are not showing up

I was looking for the "rover-remote-electric-fence-switch-text-message" tool post in the main list, and it was not there (did a text search to make sure I wasn't mistaken. Then I did a google search and found it where it should be http://farmhack.org/tools/rover-remote-electric-fence-switch-text-message - but still not in the menu.

The Farm Hack Tools App, a prototype

Attached are images of a simplified and mobile device friendly version of a Tool page. It still needs better branding (ie. a farmhack logo in the top bar) but it gives you an idea of how much cleaner we could make the Tools section. I would like to see this developed as an HTML5 app that get content and submits content to the Drupal back end but it not dependent on the Drupal back end.

Simplifying the Farm Hack Forums. A consolidated "Farm Hack Talk" forum?

Looking over the ADABio forums (DIY Farmer folk from France http://forum.adabio-autoconstruction.org/) I got to thinking about our forum structure. The structure is very focused on what Farm Hack does: develop tools, host events, and the General category which acts as a place to route people into tools or events. There has been discussion of other forum structures and such but it's been hard to conceptualize how to structure content before it exists.
