bicycle powered thresher, fan mill, and dehuller

bicycle powered thresher, fan mill, and dehuller

Links below to the complete plans for bike powered tools for small scale grain processing; a thresher, a fan mill/winnower, and a dehuller/flour mill. The plans guide a farmer or a fabricator through step-by-step instructions using wood, metal, and scavenged bicycle parts. The cost of materials is $200 per machine and the machines process about 1# per minute for each process. In a well equipped garage/shop the machines can be built in 20-40 hours each.

Auto-fill High Output Temperature Controlled Humidifier

Auto-fill High Output Temperature Controlled Humidifier

This project turns a 5 gallon bucket into a high capacity (4 gal/day), automatic fill humidifier. The bucket serves as a reservoir for the water and also as a mounting platform for the parts required to operate the humidifier. Water heated to a know temperature will transfer a predictable amount of water vapor to an air stream of a known temperature and humidity (wet bulb temperature). We use this property to develop a highly controlled humidifier using a temperature control to sense water temperature and control the heater, tank deicer for heat, and a CPU fan for air flow. We also add a toilet fill valve to the assembly to allow for automatic fill of the humidifier. NOTE: Pictures shown from the first build do not include complete safety features including: electronics enclosure, GFCI protected circuit / outlet, and terminal covers. Please take care when wiring and using this design to ensure personnel and property protection.

    Cheap Electric Thresher???

    Cheap Electric Thresher???

Don't get me wrong, I love all the bicycle powered tools being built but I was hoping to find something cheaper and easier. This led me to purchase a Sun Joe leaf Mulcher (https://www.amazon.com/Sun-Joe-SDJ616-Shredder-13-Amp/dp/B00EUU044S). I plan on threshing oats, bell beans and tillage radish seed pods once they are bone dry. I think it has potential to do the trick.

Farmer Foodshare: Food Waste, Wholesale & Hunger- Food System Hack

Farmer Foodshare: Food Waste, Wholesale & Hunger- Food System Hack

Farmer Foodshare is a food system "hack" to solve the simultaneous problems of farm waste/excess production, farm product marketing and community malnourishment. Farmer Foodshare (the organization) is a nonprofit in NC that created a set of open source approaches and inexpensive tools (marketing, wholesale distribution models) that link excess (or expanded) farm production with people who are in dire need of fresh healthy, food and community nourishment. The FF approach relies on 1) local food producers, 2) farmers markets or online hubs, 3) distribution systems (labor, transport, online, tracking), 4) marketing/communications and 5) institutions willing to use and/or buy the food to integrate into their hunger/nutrition and health programming for underserved communities. (Editor's note: I have various .doc toolkits for the "source code/instructions" for the Donation Stations, Food Ambassadors and POP Market models, if anyone wants them. Also have data on $ to farmers and the costs of running these programs, particularly as the programs grow customers and farmers. I would like to use this Farm Hack posting to spur others to contribute their food security systems innovations.
