I noticed you are using a raspberry pi. here is a Simple idea but put a solar cell in the rain cloud. Turn the plastic jar upside down and pore resin on the solar chip to keep it in place and add a lithium Ion battery charger for the night. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/231063318314?lpid=82 Simple but effective :)
