RJ spent the summer testing the Open Source temperature alarm known as Fido in greenhouses--he'll be reporting back his results and observations. He'll also talk about lessons learned from working to get internet to remote greenhouses.

Please join us for our first OpenHour! You can find the livestream both here on the forum and in the tool wiki for "OpenHour". If you miss the livecast, the conversation will be recorded and available here!

Hey there Kate,

Please be in touch with me so I can help you put together your event! daniel.b.grover@gmail.com Let's open up a doc--have you seen the event template that we have?

Thanks!

Daniel FarmHack Network Facilitator.

Here's an imgur of how to embed an excel spreadsheet into a tool wiki:

It's slightly more complicated than using docs but enables you to preserve your formatting from excel (sometimes importing an excel doc to drive can cause wonky formatting). You have to create a Microsoft acct and upload the sheet to their cloud platform, OneDrive. All in all, pretty easy!

Hey, I added that to the imgur.

One weakness of using imgur to document is that then a portion of the documentation becomes more static and not readily editable by any contributor. Benefits probably outweigh cost but just something to be aware of.

Do you have any sense of how easy/difficult it would be to track these changes? Or, alternatively, why the site is set up this way?

Hey there Dorn,

Looks like the tool template is still showing up as the farm bike (in the url and on the tool profile itself). I figured that before I also start messing around with fixing this, I might just ask you to sort it out since it seems you already have your brain on it.

Thanks,

Daniel

I put together a quick how to for embedding google docs into tool profiles or wikis, etc. You may want to click the gear (top right), and view in imgur to better see the screenshots.

Hey there,

We took a 24 cubic foot chest freezer and stood it on it's end. Removed the springs in the hinges which act as a "lift assist" (they were keeping it from closing), added a hasp to keep it shut, and inserted a welded steel shelf to take 22 flats (11 shelves). I'll be updating the photos today--take a look at how we did it and please feel free to contact us for more information.

I'd also appreciate feedback on this design. I have already realized a number of weaknesses. One of which is that the steel shelf is very difficult to protect from rust in such a wet, warm environment. Also, I should have isolated my galvanized pipe flanges and bolts from the aluminum pan. Will most likely have to replace parts of the system as the galvanic reaction eats away at them. Could also have used stainless for everything. But, whereas the shelf cost around $120 in steel, stainless would have been much more expensive.

I found some good information from MediaWiki, the wiki that is the framework of wikipedia.

Here's a Manual:Deciding whether to use a wiki as your website type and here's a Manual:Deciding which wiki software to use

So, here's a basic question--I know that we have a wiki on this site but what kind of wiki is it? Would we be better off with a different type?

Daniel

Added these to the Wiki but to put them out into the universe in multiple places:

PRINCIPLES FOR FARM HACK “ work in cadence, something's are breakable”

minimize energy use, direct use of the sun look to tradition look to natural systems adaptable transparent simple affordable understand the material durable appropriate organic can be the incuabtion chamber flexible, apdaptive

Hey there,

Your question isn't answered on the DAP forums but there is a more thorough conversation about the forecart then is present here.

DGrover's picture

Making this more clearly incorporated would be great--where on the site might it belong?

DGrover's picture

You could make a tool that is "CAD tutorials".

To other, more experienced users of FarmHack--is that the best way to organize such information on the site?

DGrover's picture

I recently downloaded FreeCAD, an open source CAD software. Does anyone have experience with it? What are its limitations?

Dorn--why do you choose SketchUp over CAD? Do you find that it has enough functionality to do everything you need to do?

Hey there,

Seems like wikipedia-style in-text links would be the tool for the job in allowing comprehensive documentation of both tools and components of tools. There must be some reason that this isn't practical to set up from a programming standpoint. Seems like otherwise more orgs. would have their own wikis of this type. Can anyone weigh in with some of the technical barriers to using this technology?

Thanks!

Hey there Bill,

It's like a roll-up side that rolls up and over the bench. Stay tuned for pictures.

Daniel

Thanks, I realized that it wasn't showing up in the preview of the page, and that was what was throwing me off. Once I looked at the tool wiki itself, the embed worked just fine.

We're gathering supplies as the event approaches. The tractor that we originally purchased, an Allis Chalmers WD-45, had more wheel and tire problems than we'd anticipated so it's probably headed for scrap.

We're looking at a Case VAC now. It's smaller and older than the WD45 and has a good easy shifter for putting the PTO in and out of gear. It has 32" tires. If anyone knows how this tractor is set up inside to power the PTO (from the transmission or directly off the rear axle), we'd love to know.

Here are two drawings Donn did of two components of this tractor conversion. These are his preliminary ideas of how these two pieces might work.

As farmhack moves forward, different kinds of events are appropriate for different groups in different places. We should think of design charrettes, showcases, social events, build days, etc. as tools which the designers of a specific farm hack event should employ to accomplish the goals of a specific hacking event.
